Boxing vs MMA

You will hear countless arguments about which sport is better? which sport is tougher? which sport spends more time in the gym? which sport has better athletes? and etc… when really you’re just comparing apples to oranges, honestly. If you’re a boxing fan you’re not gonna change your mind and vice versa. That’s the beauty of an opinion.

In Boxing you will focus on a couple of aspects; cardio and punches. Training for the possibility of going 12 rounds blow for blow is not an easy task. In MMA, you have to worry about punches, kicks, knees, elbows, judo throws, takedowns and submissions. You can’t just hold your hands up near your head like boxers, you’ll get taken down in two seconds. Statistics show that 95% of all fighting situations end on the ground.

Learning ground game is a lot harder than learning to strike. Not that proper striking is easy because a picture perfect left hook will take you endless hours of practice, but you’ll pick it up quicker when that’s all you’re focusing on. Proper technique in Jujitsu will overpower strength. There’s a reason why wrestlers and BJJ guys have dominated MMA so far. Even the better strikers in MMA have a wrestling or BJJ background. Liddel was dominant because he was a kickboxer and a Division I wrestler, so he knew how to keep the fight standing with his superb take down defense. Silva’s always been a good striker, but it took him longer to develop a great ground game, and now he’s one of the best. Silva was already an established muay thai fighter.

Gloves are different in both sports. The gloves in MMA are definitely more conducive to producing immediate, potentially fight-ending damage. The spread of impact offered by boxing  gloves is going to be painful in an entirely different sense, and is also a big part of why boxers are retiring often seeming a lot more damaged. It’s really tough to even debate this but i’ll go as far as saying; If it was MMA rules 8/10 the MMA fighter would win. If it was boxing rules 8/10 the boxer would win. If it was a street fight the MMA fighter wins 10/10.

Whether you’re a longtime avid fan of the “Sweet Science”, or a dedicated appreciative Martial Artist fan we’ll agree on one thing..

“Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them -a desire, a dream, a vision.” –Muhammad Ali
