History of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Martial arts are a system of practices that are also known as fighting arts. The objective is to defeat the other person or persons and to defend oneself or others from a particular threat. In martial arts, a code of honor is followed in which all involved are trusted to act honorably. They can also be practice in form of competition in which martial arts is classified as a combat sport. The actual term martial arts means the art of warfare, but it doesn’t need to be taken as literal. The word ‘martial’ derives from the name Mars, who was the Roman god of war.

Martial arts vary widely, and may focus on a specific area or combination of areas. Martial arts can range from Aikido, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu all the way to Boxing and Wrestling. In these areas one learns to strike with an opponent, or grapple to even dealing with weapons training or weapons defense. In practicing these methods, combat is simulated which is called sparring.

Various forms and sparring are commonly used in martial art exhibitions and tournaments. Some competitions will place various practitioners of different styles and disciplines against each other using a common set of rules, these are referred to as mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions.
